Speaker

With his background in both teaching and broadcasting, Sir Ian is an accomplished and sought-after speaker, whatever the occasion. From keynote addresses to thousands to meetings and conversations with smaller, more intimate groups, Sir Ian is an outstanding communicator:

  • He delivered the 1980 BBC Reith lectures, presented and appeared in television programmes on BBC2 and in the USA, was one of the presenters of C4’s After Dark,and has very extensive experience of dealing with the media; 

  • He has been a keynote speaker toaudiences of thousands at major conferences, including the NHS Annual Conference, the OECD in New York, the Council of Europe’s conferences on Human Rights in Alberta and Strasbourg, the Australian Hospitals Association in Sydney and the Centenary celebration of the New Zealand Medical Association in Auckland;

  • More informally, Sir Ian has been a keynote speaker at University graduations, school prize-givings and has addressed smaller groups ranging from the Indian Supreme Court toSelect Committees of the House of Commons and House of Lords.

Moderating After Dark

Moderator

Sir Ian is an experienced moderator across a wide range of industries

  • He was one of the regular hosts of Channel 4’s landmark series After Dark, described as “the most intelligent, thought-provoking and interesting programme ever to have been on television”;

  • He has acted as a moderator in both formal and informal settings for, among others, recently-qualified family doctors, young barristers, executives of pharmaceutical companies, civil servants and policy-makers, management trainees, hospital boards, research scientists, and film-makers. He is an experienced moderator across a wide range of industries.

Chair

From his days as Dean and Head of the Law School at King’s College London, Sir Ian has over 30 years’ experience as a Chair on the national stage:

  • He has chaired major public bodies including the first regulator of the NHS, the Healthcare Commission, and the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) regulating MPs’ expenses and pay; 

  • He chaired the Public Inquiry into paediatric cardiac surgery at Bristol Royal Infirmary, the Review of the surgical practice of breast surgeon Mr Paterson, the King’s Fund Inquiry into General Practice, the Ministry of Defence’s Review of Porton Down, the Department of Health’s Review of the Care of Children by the NHS, the Ministry of Agriculture’s Review of Rabies and Quarantine, the UK Research Integrity Office, and the Panel advising the Government on the establishment of Academic Health Science Centres

Consultant

Sir Ian has very wide experience as a consultant, advising groups as diverse as Royal Colleges, multi-national companies, Government Departments, and start-up enterprises in the charity sector.

Sir Ian has a particular focus on leadership in organisations.  He has advised on such diverse issues as innovation and regulation in the pharmaceutical industry, the licensing of medicines, genetic testing and insurance, the harmonisation of law on liability for medical errors in Europe, the role of Coroners, the integrity and regulation of sport at an international level, the return by museums of artefacts from other countries, the conduct and funding of scientific research, and the care and welfare of children.

His clients have included:
